Primary health care clinics will be established in three homeless shelters -- City Rescue Mission, Passageway Battered Women Shelter and the Jesus House Annex. Primary health care services will also be expanded for homeless at Healing Hands Health Care Services.
The Women and Children’s Health Access Program (WCHAP) is designed to meet primary health care needs of homeless women and children. These services will be provided in collaboration with Dr. Priya Samant, staff physician at Healing Hands Health Care.
Services to be provided include primary health care, immunizations, prenatal care, well child care, Early Periodic Screening and Diagnosis and treatment for children through age 14, tuberculosis screening and health education. The WCHAP is funded by a HUD grant through the City of Oklahoma City. Shelter organizations are providing space at each site. Donations from the community and volunteer assistance are welcome.
Families are the fastest growing population of homeless people. According to local surveys, there are over 900 individuals homeless in Oklahoma City on any given night. This includes only sheltered and visible street homeless. Many more individuals and families are temporarily housed with families and friends.
Mary Mahoney Memorial Health Center, accredited by the Accreditation Association of Ambulatory Health Care, has been providing quality primary health care, social service, dental care and pharmacy services in Northeastern Oklahoma City for the past 24 years.
